More about the architecture of the Spiritual Life Center.

Certainly! The Spiritual Life Center is a place where architecture and spirituality harmoniously intersect. Let’s explore the architectural features that make this center a serene and transformative space.

Context and Setting

The Spiritual Life Center is nestled amidst a breathtaking landscape in Trimbak, India. Its surroundings include the majestic Sahyadri mountain range, the tranquil waters of the Gautami Godavari dam, and a patchwork of multi-toned farmlands. The climate here is hot and dry during summers, but the monsoons and winters bring pleasant conditions.

Design Intentions

  1. Natural Light and Ventilation:
    • The architects aimed to create spaces that respond to the site’s unique setting.
    • Most of the buildings are designed to provide shade while allowing maximum natural light and ventilation.
    • Courtyards and green pockets perforate the structures, making the project breathable and reducing ambient temperatures.
  2. Materiality and Local Craftsmanship:
    • The project draws inspiration from local building practices in the Beze village and surrounding settlements.
    • Traditional houses in the area feature stone plinths, timber frameworks, brick or mud walls, and clay pot tiles for roofing.
    • The architects consciously employed three primary materials: Basalt Stone, Timber frame, and pot-tile roof.
    • Collaboration with local craftsmen, who have a long lineage of working with these materials, ensured authenticity and sustainability.
    • Concrete and steel were minimized, and all materials were sourced locally within a 20 to 50 km radius, reducing embodied energy.

Material Details

  1. Basalt Stone:
    • The stone work on the site was mainly carried out by the Wadari community.
    • The Wadari caste, especially in the rural economy, consists of expert stonemasons settled in Maharashtra and Northern Karnataka.
    • Basalt stone is durable, locally available, and blends seamlessly with the natural surroundings.
  2. Timber Frame:
    • Timber was used for the framework, contributing to the warmth and organic feel of the architecture.
    • The choice of timber aligns with traditional practices and ensures a connection to the local context.
  3. Pot-Tile Roof:
    • Clay pot tiles form the roofing material, providing insulation and a rustic aesthetic.
    • These tiles are a common feature in vernacular architecture and contribute to the overall charm of the center.
